the gourmande half

i had to log in again to deal with some work stuff so i thought i´d make a few notes in here -
i´ve never seen so much pizza and hamburgers for sale in my life. i had to walk for forty five minutes before i finally found traditional street food, which was amazing and filled me up for 3 soles.

also, i found the greatest bar and even though what i need to be drinking is coca tea i had a lovely glass of wine surrounded by international hippies.

so, here´s the strange thing i´ve been thinking. i´m not even excited to be here exactly. i love it, it´s perfect, but it almost feels normal. like to not be wandering the streets of a new city is just a temporary state and this is home. i almost feel like i should be more afraid, more confused, more challenged in some way. maybe because it feels familiar like mexico and i´ve done that already. the challenge is physical, hauling my ass to the hostal up the steps and the hill called resbalosa, and it really is i almost fell down it already more than once.

final note - people think i´m a tourist from another latin american country, i was told today that i have a mexican accent and not an american one, which was very nice, and anyway people are very helpful until i put on my massive backpack and they peg me for an american and they charge me three times as much and i have to argue them back down to a normal price. damn americans. so i feel weird not really like the other backpackers but obviously not peruvian, or even mexican.

anyway, i feel lame since its halloween and there are mad parties in the square, but i´m exhausted so i´m going to read my guide and go to bed.

oh, random, there was a grown man riding a very large tricycle through the empty corridors of the miami airport. on either side of the corridor were these giant colorful fish sculptures and the walls were all white. i thought i was on drugs, which by the way i´ve already been offered twice today, but i wasn´t, it was real.

they're not international hippies unless they have international ginormous hula hoops (do they?). also, i am going to steal that man's tricycle. betsy never learned how to ride a bike, and she needs some kind of alternate transportation in nueva york. good luck with your claustrophobia. that stuff wasn't underground when they built it, if that's any solace. finally, i am keeping note of all the funny things my patients are doing here, so i can update you when you get back. best thing yesterday was my rule out tb patient who has totally been faking his symptoms. after intitially pulling a pained face, he told my attending that he was, "marvellous, just swimmingly fabulous. take a look at these guns," and then flexed. public health protocal says i wasn't allowed to kick his ass out of the hospital until AFTER his stupid cultures were negative. as the israelian parrot might say, @#$%&*!le vaya, hf

I was talking to Milo. Luis is out of the hospital, but still so so. So Milo said he was just watching the news in Univision and they were saying that kidnapings have increased in Peru, so Mexico and Colombia now have competition. But I thought, couldn't he just wait to tell me this until after you came back? Anyway, true or not, I'm sure you are being careful and I'm glad you don't look like a gringuita --less danger in this regard. Did you buy the chip?
